------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ What is the Terry Fox Run about?
The Terry Fox Run is a non-competitive family event named after a Canadian. Terry Fox was 18 years old when he was diagnosed with bone cancer. His right leg was amputated above the knee. Whilst in hospital, Terry was so moved by the suffering of cancer patients, particularly children, that he resolved to run across Canada (a distance of 8,500km) to raise money for cancer research.
He called his journey the Marathon of Hope. Terry Fox, an amputee, ran a marathon (42km) a day for 143 consecutive running days, a total distance of 5,373km. At that stage, Terry was forced to abandon his run as the primary cancer spread to his lungs. Terry Fox died at the tender age of 21. Before he died, he knew that a fund-raising event would be held each year, with the same objectives as the Marathon of Hope; to help find a cure for cancer.
Since 1981, the Terry Fox Run has raised more than RM1.3Billion in aid of cancer research around the world. The Terry Fox Run in Malaysia has, since 2001, raised more than RM500,000. The Terry Fox Run in Kuala Lumpur this year is being organised by CARIF, the Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation in Malaysia, www.carif.com.my, which is being assisted by the Canadian High Commission, a number of international schools and other organisations in KL, including Citicorp, Talisman Energy, Manulife.
The beneficiary is the Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation in Malaysia (“CARIF”) www.carif.com.my
This is an event a majority of the local and expat community supports either by running, skating, biking, walking or donating. We hopes to see you there! The Run in KL will be held at the Lake Gardens on 2nd of November 2008
